I was only able to watch the first half of the match, and due to the lack of urgency skipped ahead to Dirk Kuyt’s goal in the 87th minute. The ball movement seemed more like a high school 5A match then a competitive European match. Lots of lost possesion in the middle of the pitch, each team didn’t seem like they knew with the ball once they had it and gave it away too easily. Both times had their chances in the first half, but it did not seem like either team was willing to kill for the victory. This is what we have grown to expect from Liverpool since the recent return to form. Raul missed a sitter and Joe Cole was too timid to the ball when it came down to him and the goal keeper with a 50-50 ball. Cole also had a semi breakaway which he was unable to convert. These are not easy chances and after all, Liverpool came out with the win. With the performance they gave today it does not seem like they will make it to the final 8 of the Europa League. With the top four a mile ahead of the sixth place side, the Europa League should be a dire priority which I feel they should take very seriously. Granted they do have their injuries and Sparta are not an easy team to defeat, but we have grown accustomed to Liverpool being the power house that they have the potential to be. All in all it was a good result for the Reds but they won’t get much further in the Europa League as well as the BPL if they turn out another performance like that.
